Senior Lecturer in Environmental Policy
London School of Economics, Department of Geography and Environment

Giles Atkinson is currently Reader in Environmental Policy at the Department of Geography & Environment and an Associate of the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment at the London School of Economics. Much of his research is concerned with the economics of sustainable development and green national accounting. His published work has focused on the construction of indicators or “metrics of development” that better reflect how social and economic progress depends on natural assets and signal whether development paths (based on these metrics) are sustainable or not. Giles holds a number of positions on expert bodies including the Advisory Board of “TEEB” (The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity) and the Natural Capital Committee, an independent body recently set-up by HM Government in the United Kingdom to provide expert advice on the state of English natural capital.
